Orlando Wyndham has added to the lustre of its historic Chateau Leonay property in the Barossa Valley by adorning the winery’s tower and turret with the handmade copper spires which they destined to receive ever since Leo Buring reconstructed the building originally built as EG Hoffman’s Orange Grove Wine Cellars. Although Buring’s elaborate plans for the building included more huge towers and spires, it’s a fitting touch that the two he did construct have been completed in this way. Legendary Richmond Grove wine consultant John Vickery, who in a previous employ was Leo Buring’s winemaker and doyen of Australia’s riesling makers, had the foresight to preserve Buring’s original plans, upon which the design of the spires is based.
