Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico 2011
$42.00
A delicious, elegant, moderately firm and grainy sangiovese whose heady, floral bouquet of black berries, dark cherries, small red fruits and cedar/chocolate oak reveals a hint of menthol. Underpinned by fine, firmish tannins, itÕs long, textured and moderately full in weight. Faintly sour-edged small black and red berry/cherry fruit knit tightly with chocolate/mocha oak, finishing tightly wrapped in a typically steely acidity. Aeration enhances its depth of fruit and steadily dissipates the slight funkiness evident on opening.

Rocca di Montegrossi
Rocca di Montegrossi is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, about 7 km from Gaiole. The name comes from the historic fortress (la Rocca) constructed during the Longobard period (600-800 AD) by Geremia, ancestor of the Ricasoli–Firidolfi family, and destroyed in 1530.
Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi is part of the same Ricasoli family that was instrumental in the development of the Chianti Classico story. His wines come from the San Marcellino vineyard whose organically managed soils are particularly rocky, encouraging the vine roots to grow deep. The results are naturally low yields and wines that deliver concentration and power.
The property encompasses 60 hectares, of which 18 are under vine. The vineyards are situated on gently sloping hills of calcareous origin, between 300-450 metres in altitude and and planted to densities between 3,300 vines per hectare in the old vineyards and 5200-6200 in the new.
