Pick of the Lists – Golden Century 393-399 Sussex St, Haymarket NSW 02 9212 3901

MG Garage sommelier Charles Leong is one of the horde of Sydney restaurateurs and waiting staff who regularly visit one of the city’s finest Chinese restaurants, the Golden Century, after their working hours. Like many Chinese restaurants, its wine list did lack a little in the excitement department as far as Charles and his wine-fiend friends were concerned. So, once he’d made a suggestion or two, the owners of the restaurant invited him to compile them a new list, but one sufficiently schizophrenic for it to please its usual customers as well as the restaurant trade set after midnight. So, while the wines are listed with numbers to help the non-English speaking staff employed there, here’s an excellent but neat and compact list from which you could choose something very enjoyable and very affordable at least three nights a week. Some of the more interesting wines include a Petaluma Merlot from 1994, the thoroughly drinkable 1997 Mas de Clavel from Domaine Clavel in the Languedoc, Paul Blanck’s Riesling Classique from Alsace, Pierro’s LTC Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Alphonse Mellot’s Domaine de la Moussiere from Sancerre. See what I mean?
