Pick of the Lists – Frasers, Fraser Avenue, West Perth, WA, 6005 08 9481 7100

Frasers is one of Perth’s landmark restaurants. Not simply because of its eyrie-like location atop Perth’s CBD, but because it’s also a terrific place to eat and drink, breakfast through to dinner. On a visit to Perth a few years ago I was taken there for dinner by a local who never stopped raving about the restaurant all the way up the hill. The following morning I had to meet someone for breakfast. On my way out of the hotel I was given the venue: Frasers. Later that day I had to meet somebody else for lunch. You guessed it ! Frasers again! If they’d only do accommodation as well I wouldn’t have to move! I have no problem with any restaurant around the world specialising in the wines of its region, provided they’re good. WA is responsible for a disproportionately high amount of Australia’s best wine, so there’s nothing wrong with a hefty WA bias on this list, especially since it’s augmented by Patrick Salord’s carefully chosen range of cherry-picked combinations of other Australian regions and the varieties they grow best. The list contains some interesting vertical runs of wines like Leeuwin’s Art Series Chardonnay, Pierro’s Chardonnay and Cullen Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, plus a number of interstate labels like Parker’s First Growth and Rockford’s Basket Press. Frankly, it’s the sort of list that simply beckons to be attacked by a group of ten thirsty wine drinkers who want to play. Without being cheap, which you’d hardly expect, prices are very reasonable.
