Here’s a list that’s designed to sell its product and its product is wide, varied and thoughtfully chosen. Unashamedly opinionated in the descriptions it affords to several of its wines and the various wine styles it offers, Barcorvina’s list is a genuine effort to present a truly up to the minute selection of what’s in and interesting. While it’s presented in indexed and catalogued fashion, you never get the feeling you’re browsing through a telephone directory. Instead, I found myself flicking through just to check out some of the comments certain wines attracted. Agree with them or not, they’re certainly interesting and provocative and would certainly assist the decision-making process from such a comprehensive coverage of world wines. Unlike many lists with a strong international presence, Barcorvina’s wines are priced at the affordable end of the spectrum and you certainly don’t get the impression that somebody has just listed a stack of expensive Burgundies, Bordeaux and super-Tuscans just to say they cover the whole world. I’d go to Barcorvina with an entirely open mind, confident in the knowledge that I’d enjoy drinking something there that I probably wouldn’t normally choose. And a restaurant can’t do much more than that.
