Mark Rogers operates one of Perth’s busiest and buzziest establishments at 44 King St, where wine is the message and the message is that it should be fun. The fare is fine and casual, but here you can drink as formally or informally as you please. What stands this establishment out from the pack is its willingness to innovate and the sheer number of wines available by the glass, around seventy. Furthermore, you can order 150 ml or 60 ml serves by the glass, which means that your average bloke can enjoy about eight different wines in a meal, drink a total of less than half a litre and still be able to steer his way home without falling foul of Her Majesty’s finest. As for the selection itself, it’s an ever-changing kaleidoscope of interesting, often small maker wines from all corners of this country and several others to boot. There’s a decent smattering of older vintages throughout and every month has its own ‘guest’ wine list of a dozen or so premier wines, each of which is available in both glass sizes and appears with its own detailed tasting note.
