A new deal has seen the South Australian Government retain ownership of the troubled Australian Wine Centre in Adelaide, while it has been leased out to the Australian Winemakers Federation for a peppercorn $1 per year over a 25-year period, during which time South Australian taxpayers are required to pay around A$6.25 million in maintenance costs. The Government has also made a cash injection of A$750,000, on top of previous contributions of around A$40 million. While the South Australian taxpayers no longer have to foot the bill, one hopes that the AWF is sufficiently skilled in tourism management to breathe life into the monument it made to itself.
