[question] Question submitted by Craig Simpson I have just read some of your new “Barrel Sample” wine reviews. I presume these are samples in the winery of wines not yet released as an indicator of what we are to expect from this vintage in the future. These seem extraordinarily high ratings, such as the Wynns Cabernet 2005 at 97. Is this correct? Can we expect a $20.00 (approx) cabernet rated at 97 points in the near future? If so, this is good news! [/question] [answer] These were the wines submitted for the Coonawarra Barrel Series Auction of a few weeks ago. The high mark for the sensational Wynns 2005 indicates that not only should there be a first-rate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon from that vintage, but the John Riddoch will be outstanding. I believe it would be safe to assume that the wine I rated had more in common with the latter than the former. Wynns are really now starting to reap the benefits of its vineyard renewal program, and with some good vintages finally under her belt, Sue Hodder and her team are kicking some serious goals. I just hope that Foster’s have the confidence to give the wines a price they really deserve. I see little value in releasing the Black Label for around and less than $20, for it then to sell out in a couple of weeks. [/answer]
