A toast to Sarah Dahlenburg of St Kilda, who was not only one of a large number of readers who submitted the correct answer to last issue’s quiz, but was the first opened on July 27. The meaning of the word ‘Yattarna’ is, as Sarah correctly suggested, ‘little by little, or gradually’. One might hope that future vintages develop at rather a more dramatic rate than that! Sarah, your Trial Bins are on their way! The quiz for this issue concerns one of Australia’s foremost wine dynasties, the redoubtable Adelaide family of Hardy. Generations of Hardy males have, inspired by their womenfolk, of which the venerable Eileen remains the most feted, contributed in spades to the pleasures of Australian wine drinkers. There’s presently a Hardy of youthful middle age now practising his art at an Australian winery and making, quite frankly, a very decent fist of it all. I’m prepared to give you the first name of this particular Hardy, which is Andrew, but my question is at what winery does he presently weave his spell? The first correct answer received and opened on November 13, 1998 wins a bottle of his good work there. There’s a bonus of another bottle if you can add the name of the winery he left to take up his present role.
