OnWine Quiz #8

So, you’re all far too polite. The winemaker in question from the last issue remains anonymous, for the time being at least. OnWine continues to keep a very close eye on the condition of Australia’s most talented eleveurs. This issue’s quiz is rather topical and fresh. It’s been impossible to avoid the juggernaut of pre-publicity surrounding the release of Penfolds’ new flagship white. Although it’s certainly a decent drink and deserves some publicity for that, most of the interest in the trade surrounded the name it would ultimately be given. ‘Grange’ was out; there was no chance of that. Bets were flying. Schubert? Hardly. They finally went for ‘Yattarna’. Interesting word, but what does it actually mean? I don’t have too many spare bottles of the stuff lying around, but am happy to part with two bottles of the wines made by Penfolds as Trial Bins while refining the style that Yattarna has become. Send your answer to OnWine Quiz #8, 565 Burwood Rd, Hawthorn, Victoria, 3122. The first correct answer opened on July 27, 1998 wins the brace of antecedents. Len Evans (to a French audience): “You have made your best wine. There is absolutely nothing you can do to improve it. In Australia our best wine is ahead of us. That’s the excitement of Australian wine.”
