Staying on a wildlife theme, a new Hardy wine does have an emu on its label and is called ‘Oomoo’, but this word apparently doesn’t have any ornithological meaning. Instead, it just means ‘good’, which just about aptly describes the $14.95 McLaren Vale Shiraz that now carries a slightly modernized version of an old company label dating back to the 1850s. Oomoo was apparently Thomas Hardy’s most recognised label throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. The new wine is a 2001 shiraz (15.9, drink 2003-2006) whose spicy, leathery varietal aromas and gentle, sweet and oaky palate will meet all expectations.
