The Chalone Wine Group is one of the first US wineries to place a new health statement approved by the Treasury Department and its Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF). On the back label of Carmenet Winery’s 1997 Dynamite Cabernet Sauvignon appears the comment: eThe proud people who made this wine encourage you to consult your family doctor about the health effects of wine consumption. This may not seem like much, but in the context of the Proposition 65-inspired wine labelling legislation of the US, represents almost an enlightened development. Tom Selfridge, Carmenet’s CEO, says: ‘We are not making any health claims. We are simply encouraging our customers to educate themselves.’
