Tough news for drinkers of Margaret River chardonnay is that widespread damage over two days of exceptional winds early in the season have knocked down yields by up to 65% in some of the premier vineyards. Severe yield reductions are reported in the vineyards operated by Cullens, Moss Wood, Pierro and Leeuwin Estate. Later varieties of sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon and merlot escaped chardonnay’s fate.
