In other Australian results at this event, Mildara Blass won the ‘White Wine of the Year’ with the 1999 Wolf Blass South Australian Chardonnay, an award that raises my eyebrows at the very least, plus ‘Red Wine of the Year’ with the 1998 Metala Shiraz Cabernet (18.1, drink 2006-2010). De Bortoli also won the trophy for the Best Chardonnay with its Yarra Valley Chardonnay 1998 (18.0, drink 2003-2006), which bodes the question as to how another chardonnay could pip it for ‘White Wine of the Year’. Other gold medal winners at the show from the Mildara Blass stable were: 1996 Wolf Blass President’s Selection Shiraz, 1998 Dallas Conte Cabernet Sauvignon, 1998 Mount Ida Shiraz (18.9, drink 2003-2006+), 1998 Rothbury Estate Brokenback Shiraz (18.1, drink 2006-2010) and the 1998 Steve Maglieri Shiraz (17.2, drink 2003-2006).
