Wine Industry News reports that the 2000 United States vintage, a record 3.2 million tonnes, not only caused a reduction of prices on the speculative grape market, but some vineyards without contracts were not even harvested at all. Legislative changes to remove wines made with added water from the market will perhaps soak up 300,000 tonnes of fruit, but for the first time in its history, the US now needs to become a significant exporter of wine. Given the strength of its currency, this will be an interesting challenge.
