Balgownie Estate Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Bendigo
Price Range at Release: $30-$49
Vintage: 2018
Alc %: 14.0

A properly firm and textural cabernet with a rich core of dark berries and plums that moves down a crunchy spine of gravelly tannins before being punctuated with refreshing acidity. Lifted by floral scents and notes of leather and dried herbs, it's tightly knit with cedry oak. Well worthy of cellaring, it perhaps lacks the concentration for an even higher score.

Balgownie Estate
Balgownie has come a long way from its early times as a small individual domaine near Bendigo, although its finest wines still come from the original plantings established by former Bendigo chemist, musician and Bugatti fiend, Stuart Anderson. This vineyard is a national treasure -  it has the ability to produce reds from cabernet sauvignon and shiraz that cellar with the elegance and longevity to rival anything in Australia, yet it can also produce savoury and mineral chardonnay the equal of some fine cool-climate sites. The scarce releases of Old Vine Shiraz are nothing short of spectacular. The Yarra Valley wines, the best of which now have a white label, are still some distance from these classics.
