Just when you were wondering the latest idea to give the guy or gal who already owns absolutely everything, comes a brilliant book from Penfolds that traces the history, vintage by vintage, of its icon wine, Grange. Superbly illustrated, designed and printed, Penfolds Grange is a medium-sized but sumptuously presented hardcover and clothbound book that devotes a page to every Grange vintage. It lists the precise varietal breakdown (for Grange historically contains some cabernet sauvignon) as well as the list of regions that contributed to each wine. Vintage conditions, tasting notes and some technical details (of which VA is an interesting absentee) are also provided, along with some of the more floral and flattering media reviews from around the world, especially from US critic Robert Parker. The book starts with a history of Grange as written by its creator, Max Schubert, and there’s also some information on its birthplace, Magill Estate. You can only buy this book from the visitor centre at Magill Estate, for $100 a copy.
