Mornington Peninsula vigneron Garry Crittenden, whose ‘i’ range is leading the introduction of Italian wine varieties into Australian vineyards, has won a $5,000 fellowship from the NSW Wine Press Club to research the most suitable combinations of Italian grape variety and Australian wine region. He will be joined in his efforts by second year student at the University of Adelaide, Alexander McKay, who recently won a $3,000 Summer Studentship from the Cooperative Research Centre for Viticulture. ‘Our research will reduce the risk involved with planting Italian varieties in unsuitable regions and provide a base for future study’, said Crittenden.
