[question] Question submitted by Neil McKenzie I often read the term ‘briary’ in describing a wine, but am unclear as to what it refers to. Are you able to offer a “lay” interpretation? [/question] [answer] I find the word ‘briary’ useful when attempting to communicate a particular kind of fruit expression that has an accentuated wildness about its character, which might contrast with a more cultivated and precise taste. Others use it to describe wines that are aggressive, tannic, alcoholic and even peppery. I am less confident in this definition and would not use the term as such. [/answer]
