Classic Port Reference Re-Released

Port enthusiasts might well be pleased to learn of a new edition of Ben Howkins’ Rich, Rare & Red, A Guide to Port. While the body of the text remains relatively unchanged from the previous edition published in 1987, it is the twenty pages of Preface that comprise a fine essay in recent developments in Portugal, recent vintages, changes in ownership, as well as recent developments in the vineyards and the cellars. The book remains a fine reference for anyone visiting Portugal or interested in the history of port, and while it still contains rather eccentric gems like: ‘A port after a meal is normal rather than not’ to describe Australian drinking habits, Howkins is indeed well versed on the Portuguese view of its classic wine.
