Figures for the end of 1997 show that Bordeaux sold a record 2.37 million hectolitres that year, up by 22% on 1996. That record almost pales against the 41% increase in sales value to FRF7.27 billion for the same period, representing a quarter of the sales generated by all French wines. In order of importance, Bordeaux’ most significant export markets by value are Germany, the EUBL, UK, the USA, Japan, Switzerland, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Denmark, Hong Kong, Canada and Singapore. Australian wine makers should take note that our single largest export market, the UK, has increased its imports from Bordeaux by 15% over the last fifteen months.
