Australians are drinking more wine and less beer. Regrettably, we’re also drinking more pre-mixed alcoholic beverage. Australian beer consumption per capita took a backward step in 2000-01, the first time for many years. Full-strength beer accounted for 39% of the alcohol consumed last financial year, wine for 32%, spirits 14%, light to mid-strength beer 10%, and pre-mixed beverages 5%. Other trends indicate that consumers are substituting low-alcohol for full strength beer, and that the cocktail is well and truly back in town. Now where did I put the Noilly Prat??
