Australia’s Oldest Wine Bottles

Cleveland’s Keith Brien has taken the concept of specialty wine packaging to an unprecedented extreme by bottling a hundred bottles of his 1998 Redcastle Shiraz into ‘goldfield blacks’, hand blown bottles between 140 and 150 years of age. He stumbled over the first of the rare bottles in his Macedon Ranges vineyard, then bought the rest from a local gold fossicker and bottle collector. While the entire 1998 vintage was quickly snapped up at the promotional price of $40 per bottle, Brien is confident he can repeat the performance with the 1999 vintage, to be released around September 2000.
