The Australian Taxation Office has clearly become something of an expert in viticulture. Otherwise, how could it possibly manage its recent directive that disease-affected grapes are not considered fit for human consumption? This way, you see, they will attract the GST, which is not to be applied to grapes which ARE fit for human consumption. But where does this leave botrytis cinerea? Have they never tasted Chateau d’Yquem or De Bortoli’s Noble One? How do we Australians let such ill-informed humanoids get into positions of such responsibility? Will we have to pay more for our daily ration of dessert wine? Watch this space.
