The Watsons of Lygon St have been justifiably recognised en masse as Legends of Rutherglen for their efforts in promoting the wines of this region at their famous wine bar in Carlton since the 1930s. Now in their third generation, the Watson family’s association with the region commenced when Jimmy Watson, founder of the said eponymous wine bar, brought to Melbourne the table and fortified wines of Brown Brothers, Chambers, All Saints, Gehrig and Baileys to be served by the bottle and glass. Today Allan and Judy, with sons Nigel and Simon, maintain the tradition. The Legends Weekend, scheduled for November 9-10, features a testimonial dinner to the family plus a Picnic in the Park.
