And Why the Cork Lobby is Worried!

Global cork oak plantings increased by 23% during the decade of the 1990s. Portuguese plantings have increased from 725,000 ha to 1,450,000 ha, plantings in Spain from 510,000 to 901,000 ha and in Morocco from 198,000 to 541,000 ha. Furthermore, the area in Portugal and Spain is expected to double in the next 15 years to 2.4 million hectares, while extensive cork forests planted in northern Africa over the last few years have still to reach their full yielding potential.
