When choosing the wines for sale in the store at Oliver’s Wines I only ever select the very best at whatever price they are. In other words, simply by being listed in our store is an endorsement - regardless of where they’re from, what they’re made from or how they’re made.
I taste and approve every wine listed (as I do for every wine covered on this platform), and when each new vintage comes along, I need to taste and approve that as well.
So, when looking at wines in the shop, please don’t be guided simply by the score I might give a wine. Or even its price, for that matter. There are plenty of truly delicious wines that offer great quality and truly enjoyable drinking that I rate with less than 90 points out of 100. Provided their prices are reasonable, these wines can and frequently do provide huge amounts of pleasure for the less formal, everyday wine-drinking experiences in life. That’s why we’re listing them, and proudly.
The notion that you shouldn’t buy a wine that rates less than 90 points says more about the way scores are given by other critics and retailers than about the wines themselves. As for highly rated scores being sold for every low prices? They do exist from time to time, but there’s usually a back story.
