Ever wondered how some surveys actually work? Right now I’d like to know how at the gala dinner for the recent International Wine Tourism Conference at Margaret River, Coonawarra was announced as the third place winner (and the leading Australian wine region) in an Internet poll to find The Most Fabulous Wine Region in the World. The actual winner was the New Zealand region of Canterbury, with another Kiwi region, Marlborough, coming in third. Apparently this was a people’s choice award (ie a popularity poll), so I’ll bet a few phone lines from Coonawarra, Canterbury and Marlborough have been working overtime! I love Coonawarra and respect many of its wines. I’ve lived there and worked there and strolled over much of its wide, dead-flat expanse of continuous vineyard landscape. But the third Most Fabulous Wine Region in the World? Get away from here!
