In case anyone thought Australia was getting a particularly raw deal with the negotiators in the European Union (EU), here are a couple of snippets from the Australian Wine & Brandy Corporation (AWBC) that suggest we’re not alone. A shipment of Argentinian wine was ‘eliminated’ in Germany because it received an adjustment of malic acid, while a load of French wine was rejected in the UK because it was labelled as ‘Shiraz’ and not ‘Syrah’, as the grape must be called if grown in France. Neither issue would prevent an Australian wine from being sold in the EU.
