OnWine Quiz #20

When you set a quiz answer with a trick question, you don’t expect everyone to fall for it, yet that’s exactly what happened with OnWine Quiz #19. I shall have to drink the Wolf Blass Brown Label 1986 all by myself, since nobody realised that the years in which the bow-tied German winemaking enigma won the Jimmy Watson Trophy were 1974 to 1976 inclusive. The wines were of course 1973, 1974 and 1975, but that wasn’t the question, was it? Never mind, for neither the Jimmy Watson Trophy nor Wolf Blass have looked back since. In fact, you might say they helped to make each other what they are today. Wolfie has gone on to be worth a not insignificant fortune, while the JWT has managed to snuff out any credibility it might have had as an award for unfinished and unbottled wine. Still, Wolf Blass’ legacy remains: they still reckon it’s worth a million bucks to win the Jimmy Watson. Rymill’s owner, Peter Rymill, is the subject of this quiz. He used to perform, at a very high level, in a sport that has almost become Australian-owned in the last two Olympics. In fact, he became Australian champion at it. For a chance to win a pair of excellent bottles of red Rymill wine, just name the sport.
