Real Pinot from Macedon

Bindi is a tiny vineyard near Gisborne in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges whose 1995 Chardonnay moved me rather (August 1996 issue). Ultimately, it will make a greater name for its pinot noir, although the 1995 wine is taking its time to come back together after bottling. Bursting with ripe cherries, Chinese spices, chocolate, minty rose petals and fennel, it’s been fermentated warm and wild. Sweet and fleshy, the palate is a mere shadow of what it will become, accented with plums, berries and a charmingly feral edge. I rate it 18.4 and recommend cellaring until at least 2000-03.
