According to Hugh Johnson’s ‘The Story of Wine’, the first wine ever drunk in Australia took place when Lieutenant Gidley King offered some to two Aborigines who greeted the First Fleet’s arrival at Botany Bay. Johnson notes that the Aborigines spat the wine out, but suggests there is no reason to think that the lieutenant wasted the rest of the bottle.
