For nearly two decades Mountadam has been a leader in the more heavily structured expressions of Australian chardonnay and with the 1997 vintage, Adam Wynn has just released his best Chardonnay in years. Rated at 18.7 (drink 2002-2005) this wine is intensely flavoured, luxuriant, plump and creamy, yet it retains the suppleness and fineness expected of a sophisticated chardonnay. Its nose presents carefully oaked, mealy aromas of fresh melons and nectarine, with nutty and floral complexity. Typically mouthfilling in Mountadam style, its ripe peach, apple and melon fruit is supported by a background of leesy and malolactic influences before finishing with soft acids. It’s a laid-back armchair ride of a chardonnay and puts this Mountadam label right back under the spotlight (Retail $32.00, approx.).
