Wolf Blass red winemaker John Glaetzer has been declared the Legend of Langhorne Creek for 1999. One of identical twins, both of whom have made their mark in winemaking, Glaetzer has been making wine from Langhorne Creek fruit for over 25 years. Blass hired him as a mere seventeen year-old in 1974, having noticed his ability to assess wine. Easing into the silky-smooth, yet substantially oaky house style at Blass, Glaetzer contributed to the string of Jimmy Watson Trophies collected by Blass from 1974 to 1976 inclusive. The winning wines, the 1973, 1974 and 1975 Wolf Blass Black Labels each contained 80% Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon. Well-cellared bottles can still look exceptional. The two previous winners of the title ‘Legend of Langhorne Creek’ were Wolf Blass and Frank and Len Potts, joint recipients in 1999.
