Just minutes back in the office after a vertical tasting of sparkling wine and shiraz viognier blends at Yering Station, I’m typing as fast as I can to alert you of a stunning new wine that will be released in April. Forewarned is forearmed, I firmly believe. The wine that made my day is Yering Station’s Reserve Shiraz Viognier 2002. Sure, it’s a show pony, with the odd trophy to boot, but it’s also a wine of exceptional breeding, presence, balance and future. It simply flaunts its exceptionally well ripened (which certainly does NOT mean over-ripened) and concentrated fruit, soaks up some pretty handy new oak and carries with it a firm, but fine-grained spine of tannins so supple and approachable that it’s already way too easy to drink. Its heady, opulent perfume of flowers, musk, spices and pure, pristine dark fruit precede a palate saturated with searingly intense and superbly focused dark fruits. There’s a hint of meatiness and earthiness about its intense and lingering finish. I rate the wine at 19.0 and despite the fact that it’s all too easy to drink already, it should peak between 2014-2022. It will sell around $58 per bottle.
