It’s the most expensive Riverina red wine by some margin, but the generously proportioned Westend Three Bridges Cabernet Sauvignon 1997 is well worthy of your attention. It’s fragrant and brightly flavoured, firm and elegant, with intense fruit flavours of small dark berries and plums carefully integrated with mocha oak and tight-knit tannins. The 1997 vintage is shortly to sell out, but look out for its equally impressive succeeding wine from 1998. Its owner Bill Calabria says he’s unlikely to increase the retail price from its current level of around $19.95. I didn’t expect to see a Riverina red of this standard for some years.
