Underpinned by waxy and nutty complexity, its evenly ripened, juicy presence of melon and grapefruit are deftly knit with creamy malolactic influences, a savoury minerality and suggestions of smoked meats. It finishes with brightness, tightness and a lingering core of pristine fruit.

Tapanappa focuses on three specific South Australian terroirs. First of these is the Tiers vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley, which is owned by Brian Croser and also provides the fruit for Petaluma’s flagship Tiers Chardonnay. Second is the Whalebone Vineyard in the heart of what is now Wrattonbully in the state’s south-east, home to a steadily improving blend between Merlot and Cabernet Franc plus a rather old-fashioned Cabernet Shiraz. The third site is perhaps the most intriguing - a pinot noir vineyard called Foggy Hill planted between 300-350 metres in altitude on a northwest facing slope at the highest point of the Fleurieu Peninsula. While quality has not been consistent, there have been some quite remarkable pinots released to date from this moist unlikely of regions.
