Shame on Sydney Opera House management
Last week the taxpayer-funded Sydney Opera House announced with great pride but a minimum of either sensitivity or intelligence that it welcomed Champagne Pommery as its new wine partner. The New South Wales wine industry has chosen to take this news as a direct and personal insult – something with which I entirely agree. In times like these, when our wine industry and our economy are struggling like hardly ever before, we need to support our local industries and remember that we are in fact a community, despite the myriad efforts to divide us. There are plenty of exceptional wineries in New South Wales and those involved in making this decision on behalf of the Opera House need to get back in touch with the everyday reality facing those perhaps less privileged. The architectural icon of Australian culture should be serving and promoting Australian wine, period.

Jeremy Oliver’s reviews and ratings are 100% independent. He doesn’t accept cash from wineries to taste their wines or let them use his scores and reviews. He believes the public deserves commentary that is the writer’s opinion alone and doesn’t involve a money trail. He has never accepted cash – through direct payment, sponsorship or advertising – from wineries in exchange for reviewing and rating their wines. That’s not about to change. Furthermore, Jeremy will continue to rate and review all wines just the same – whether they are offered for sale at Oliver’s Wines or not. That’s his promise.
Most online wine recommendation systems push all buyers towards the same wines – regardless of their unique tastes – since that’s what the retailer is trying to sell. At Oliver’s Wines we are 100% focused on every user as an individual, and our system only interprets an individual’s preferences before recommending to them as an audience of one. This platform enables each user to have a personal wine drinking coach ¬– Jeremy Oliver – without charge. Of course, you don’t have to use it, but we’re trying our hardest to ensure you only buy wines we know you’re going to enjoy ¬– at the price you want to spend.
It’s difficult for wineries to have their wines listed in the shop at Oliver’s Wines, since ours is a curated selection that Jeremy Oliver has chosen to reflect the very best wines from Australia and overseas at every price point. Jeremy tastes and approves every single wine we carry, and also has to approve every change in vintage for wines we carry in stock. This is a process you can trust. Once it’s approved, Jeremy will create content to tell the story of each wine in the store ¬– so you can learn more about it and share this knowledge with your friends, just as you’re sharing the bottle.
At Oliver’s Wines we want to use technology to recreate a personal, old-fashioned wine buying experience that recognises your very own tastes and interests in wine. No other visitor will have the same user experience at this platform that you do, since the moment you start telling us about your favourite wines, our unique, one-on-one relationship with you commences. We don’t see you as part of a crowd. Our aim is to take you on a journey of your own making, of surprise and discovery. And ultimately, a journey of trust and satisfaction.
