Grey Sands Byzantine White Blend 2013
$40.00
Pungent ripe aromas of apricot, ginger, cloves and cinnamon with nutty undernotes plus a floral whiff of Turkish Delight precede a heavily textured, unctuous but rather warm and spirity palate that finishes a little raw and hot.

Grey Sands
Grey Sands is a 3.5 ha vineyard of no less than 17 close-planted varieties, at 8800 vines per hectare. I have no doubt that this is one of the most significant sites in Tasmania, and over the years I have given high ratings indeed to its Pinot Gris, Merlot and The Mattock (merlot-driven right bank Bordeaux blend). A recent revisit of some mature wines has given me plenty of reason to include Grey Sands' Pinot Noir as a benchmark of this variety, especially when given 5-8 years of cellar life. The wines are not only especially affordable in this crazy market but are also released in most cases with genuine bottle age. I'm a huge fan, especially of the finesse and structure of the reds. Adding to all this is a recent Malbec tasting that took me straight to Cahors. Wonderful stuff! No wines were made in 2020 due to poor conditions.
