A rustic, developing merlot whose bouquet of cherries, cranberries and raisins reveals faintly leathery and herbal notes. The palate is a little hard and linear, with some slightly jammy aspects as well as under-ripe vegeal aspects supported by green-edged tannins and finished with acids that remain a fraction awkward. From a warmer season – perhaps a little too warm.

Ros Ritchie was a winemaking star when I first got into wine. A genuine pioneer as a female winemaker, she has always let her own wines do the talking for her. Ros is a very talented maker of white wines, with great experience from what was once her family's property at Mansfield in Victoria's High Country. Her new wines from small sites around the Upper Goulburn and King Valley take this background into another and higher dimension of intrigue and complexity. We now see a totally professional and mature maker of wine working at a very high level indeed. There's nothing trendy or fashionable about Ros' modern wines. Instead, they deliver over and above expectations in terms of variety purity, structure and balance. Showing a thorough understanding of the international benchmarks for each wine, they're neither flashy nor showy - just great wines to enjoy.
