A warm summer following a cold winter and cool springtime has delivered a beautifully mature and complex dessert wine right in the window of balance between development and freshness.
An exercise in balance and finesse, this is a classic Margaux that delivers a truly exceptional bouquet of smoky, cigarboxy and underbrush, with a long, silky and red-fruited palate that seamlessly extends forever. One of the highlights of this spectacular vintage.
A deep, alluring perfume of violets, cassis, raspberries and mulberries is augmented by fresh, fine-grained cedar/vanilla oak and undertones of dried herbs. With time it has begun to reveal suggestions of wet wool and lanolin, losing the brightness of its youth. It’s still supple and fine-grained, with a lively core of red berry flavour, but it’s drying out from the finish and does finish with some slightly edgy and awkward aspects.
Willowy and elegant, with the structure, length and balance and mature with grace. Dusty and faintly herbal aromas of small black and red berries, mulberries and violets backed by restrained oak and musky forest floor undertones, reveal a hint of capsicum. Initially plump and juicy, it’s medium to full-bodied, with restrained but lively black and red berry and plum flavours supported by reserved oak and a supple spine of dusty tannin. It finishes with length and persistence, but with some underlying herbal notes and a suggestion of green-edged acidity.
A mature Grange of fullish to medium weight that reveals complex smoky, meaty and dusty autumnal notes beneath its pruney bouquet. It’s still firm and textural with a forward presence of sweet fruit and oak that does dry out a little towards the finish.
Quite possibly the finest St Henri yet released. Superbly balanced, with a deep, spicy bouquet whose dense aromas of blue, black and blood red fruits are lifted by an alluring perfume of red and blue flowers, a hint of cracked pepper and backed by suggestions of smoked meats, minerals and graphite. It’s smooth and sumptuous, with a long, velvety marriage of unctuous meaty fruit wrapped around a fine, grainy backbone and underpinned by chocolatey, faintly tarry nuances. Delivering near-perfect adherence to style, it finishes with wonderful length and harmony.
Very stylish and shapely, presenting a lightly smoky expression of sweet berries, fresh vanilla/dark chocolate oak and undertones of dried herbs backed by very faint suggestions of mint and meatiness. Underpinned by firm, loose-knit dusty tannins, it’s long and harmonious, with brightly lit flavours culminating in a bittersweet finish. Tightly focused and finely balanced: a cellar style.
Simply a beautiful wine, exuding elegance and regional style. Scented with fresh cassis, mulberries and dark cherries backed by nuances of blackberries, tight-knit chocolate/cedary oak, briar and dark olives, it’s long and silky, supple and fine-grained. Its intense, pristine and almost sour-edged fruit moves seamlessly down the surprisingly firm palate, finishing with wonderful brightness and length. Certain to age gracefully.
Charmingly gentle, smooth and supple, with a delicate, dusty bouquet of light floral notes, sweet black and red berries and restrained cedary oak. It’s finely crafted, elegant and willowy, with a pleasing length of gentle fruit, reserved oak and supple tannins, finishing with fresh acids and just a hint of a green edge.
